An Interview with Lianne

The end of the school year is always a torrent of activities and emotions here at Parker. We celebrate Shows of Work, marvel at how much we have grown and accomplished, and admittedly get a bit choked up with pride as our students step confidently forward into their next chapter.  This June, our beloved Lynn Schuster will retire. This change will also require us as a school to evolve with conviction. We are incredibly fortunate to be doing so with Lianne Adams, our new Director of Middle School and Upper Elementary. Lianne is a seasoned educator with over 25 years of experience. She began her career teaching public school in Utah, and for the past 19 years she has worked at the Susan Odell Taylor School, an independent school in Troy, NY. Lianne’s experience at Taylor shaped her passion for child-centered education, close-knit school communities, and purposeful, inquiry-based learning. Lianne is deeply connected to her work, and believes strongly in the importance of nurturing strong relationships, creating meaningful learning environments, and continuing to grow alongside the students and educators she serves. Lianne lives in North Greenbush with her husband, Don. They have three grown children: Julia, who is 25 and currently in her third year of medical school; Janey, 23, who works as an ER nurse; and Jack, 21, who is heading into his senior year of college. As a family, they love traveling, especially visiting national parks and spending time outdoors, boating, and camping. Lianne also enjoys cooking, home projects, and spending time with her siblings whenever she can. Please read on to learn more about Lianne, in her own words…

How and why did you get into teaching and education? “Since I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I’ve always loved learning, and the idea of sharing that excitement with others is what first drew me to education. Working with children has always brought me joy. Their energy, creativity, and curiosity make every day feel meaningful. What has always driven me is the chance to spark imagination, support growth, and make a real difference in a child’s life. That’s what made teaching so fulfilling, and it’s still what motivates me now as an administrator. Even though I’m not in the classroom every day, I continue to champion student learning by supporting teachers, shaping school culture, and ensuring that every child feels seen, known, and challenged.”

What drew you to Parker School? What drew me to Parker wasn’t just its mission, but the way that mission is lived every day. From my first visit, I could feel the school’s vibrant energy and deep sense of purpose. Parker fosters an environment where curiosity leads the way, creativity is part of the culture, and learning is both engaging and meaningful. The school’s commitment to progressive education and student voices mirrors the values I’ve carried throughout my career, making it a natural next step in my journey. I’m energized by the opportunity to contribute to such a thoughtful, student-centered school and to continue growing as an educator and leader.

What is your educational philosophy? I believe students learn best when they feel respected, included, and genuinely known. Learning should be joyful and purposeful, rooted in curiosity, and connected to the real world. When students are empowered to ask questions, explore their interests, and reflect on their growth, they develop not only academic skills but empathy, independence, and confidence. I am committed to creating inclusive learning environments where connection comes first and students feel a strong sense of belonging and their voices are heard. As a school leader, I value honest conversations, learning from one another, and a culture of shared growth. Schools should be places where both students and adults are supported, inspired, and continually growing.

What do you enjoy about working with middle grade students (Grades 3–8)? For over 25 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with middle grade students, and I truly never get tired of it. Every day, they keep me on my toes in the best possible way. They’re curious, funny, thoughtful, and full of possibility. I’m always intrigued by their personalities and the ways they process and question the world. This stage is such a powerful time of growth. Students are beginning to form their own ideas, take ownership of their learning, and discover who they are. At the same time, they still carry a sense of wonder and playfulness that makes this work especially rewarding. It is also a time of big transitions academically, socially, and emotionally, and I find deep meaning in guiding students through those changes. Helping them build confidence, take healthy risks, and embrace learning with curiosity has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my career.

What do you enjoy about working with other educators? I love the energy that comes from collaboration, whether it’s designing meaningful curriculum, reflecting on practice, or solving challenges together. I enjoy sharing my experience and perspective, but I learn just as much from the educators around me. Some of my most meaningful work has come from creating with colleagues, rethinking how we teach, designing authentic student experiences, or simply exchanging ideas that spark something new. I find joy in being a thought partner and a steady support. I especially enjoy the moments when I can roll up my sleeves and jump in—co-teaching, planning, or just brainstorming side by side. It is incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that is creative, committed, and grounded in what is best for kids.

What are you looking forward to about working at Parker? I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Parker community. From my first visit, I felt a sense of energy, warmth, and purpose. Parker is a place where curiosity is celebrated, creativity is encouraged, and learning is deeply meaningful. Its commitment to progressive education and honoring student voices aligns fully with my own educational values. I am especially excited to work with such a dedicated and thoughtful team of educators. The opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, engage with curious and motivated students, and contribute to a school that leads with heart and purpose is incredibly meaningful to me. Chaperoning the middle school dance last week gave me a wonderful firsthand glimpse into Parker’s culture. It was joyful, inclusive, and full of connection. That evening confirmed what I already sensed. I’m joining a community where I can grow, contribute, and be part of something truly special.

How do you hope to learn as an educator in this new role? One of the things I love most about education is that there is always room to grow. In this new role, I’m excited to learn from the students, faculty, and families who make Parker what it is. I look forward to listening deeply, building strong relationships, and contributing to a learning community that values collaboration and continuous improvement. I hope to stretch my thinking, explore new ideas, and continue to evolve as a leader. I know this role will challenge and inspire me, and I welcome the opportunity to support both student and teacher growth in ways that reflect Parker’s mission and spirit.

What are your hopes and dreams for the next school year? My greatest hope for next school year is to build strong, trusting relationships across the community. I’m eager to support the meaningful work already happening at Parker and to be a consistent presence for students, teachers, and families. I look forward to partnering with faculty to celebrate their strengths and to foster a joyful, dynamic, and student-centered environment. I hope to be someone who listens well, encourages others, and helps move the work forward with clarity and care. Most of all, I hope the year feels full of possibility. I want students to feel confident and curious, teachers to feel energized and valued, and the community to feel connected through shared purpose and joy. Whether it’s organizing a classroom bookshelf, cheering on a student at recess, or finding joy in the small day-to-day moments, I hope to bring humor, heart, and a steady presence to the year ahead.
